WHY THIS EVENT
Baltic Gastronomic Festival is a long-term project to increase cross-sector collaborations, engagement of organisations, individuals and communities to work towards a more sustainable and healthy Baltic food region.
Simply put, to keep Baltic culinary traditions alive, avoid food waste and cherish locally grown foods.
THREE COUNTRIES FOR EXPLORING A CULINARY JOURNEY
Estonians have a deep relationship with their food. They like to know where it comes from and prefer local products over anything else.
This is one of the reasons that Estonian cuisine, whether it’s traditional or modern, has such a strong connection with the changing seasons and the land nearby. Of course, Estonia is also a modern food destination, which means fusing together different styles and constantly innovating for different tastes. To understand the full range of the Estonian palette, you’d need to travel throughout the country.
Enjoying local flavours is an important part of travelling. Often certain dishes and even the entire cuisine are matched to a specific region or country. There are flavours that are recognised all over the world – such as Italian cuisine, Asian flavours and traditional Georgian dishes. Although the entire world is not aware of it, Latvia also has its own flavours. Flavours are inherited from recipe books written by grandmothers themselves.
Flavours that remind one of childhood, specific celebrations or special seasons. When going to Latvia, you definitely have to hear out the stories and enjoy these flavours!
In Lithuania, so much of the food comes from the land – they catch it in their clear lakes and lagoons, hunt it in their forests, harvest it in their fields, and ripen it in their gardens. Then the talented hands of their cooks prepare it all and put it on the table.
Lithuanian cuisine is known for its naturalness, for ancient cooking traditions served up in new ways, and for aesthetics, without which no breakfast, lunch or dinner is imaginable. Don’t be surprised if instead of an avocado, you’re served a kohlrabi, or if instead of tuna, you get a piece of local zander. And if for dessert you’re offered a piece of curd cheese pie with nettle filling or red beet jelly! All you have to do is sit down and taste everything in front of you.
